Software Engineer at BlueConduit

BlueConduit software engineers develop, launch, and maintain innovative software products and data pipelines, involving a variety of data sources and machine learning to predict health hazards in infrastructure. Our founding team members were first to build software that guided the then-largest replacement of lead water pipes in the US (Flint, MI). We’ve expanded that to serve cities throughout North America, on both a for-profit and charitable basis. We are passionate about using data science for social good and improving equity.

BlueConduit is seeking a software engineer who will:

  • Work on new client-facing web apps, featuring ML model output, to be used by water utility employees.

  • Contribute to the full stack of software development (e.g., client frontends, application backends, data pipelines / ETL processes, cloud infrastructure) to serve clients and internal stakeholders.

  • Head up the development of a free and open source tool that clients will use to support their lead service line replacement efforts, through guided data I/O, data cleaning, map-based visualization.

  • Collaborate with data scientists to design and implement shared ML tools and libraries.

  • Engage in design processes to gather stakeholder and user feedback to continuously iterate on commercial products and free tools.

We are a small, remote, and growing team, so this is an excellent opportunity to grow into and shape your role at our company. The role provides opportunities for mentorship and growth and opportunities for stepping into leadership positions, as well.

Necessary qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience building full stack applications.

  • Comfort with the javascript and python ecosystems.

  • Familiarity with architectural patterns for client frontend applications, restful web services, ETL workflows, and DevOps.

  • Proficiency with Git workflow.

  • Familiarity with Agile product development (e.g., sprints, standups, scrums).

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating on software projects.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.

  • Must be eligible to work in the US.

Nice-to-have qualifications

  • Past experience implementing different kinds of machine learning models and serving architectures.

  • Past experience supporting and collaborating with data scientists.

  • Passion for human-centered design.

  • Experience maintaining open source projects.

  • Passion for environmental justice and community well-being, as the company continues to partner with communities, as it did in Flint, around the country.

About BlueConduit

BlueConduit is a social venture that uses machine learning to support decision making to improve public health. Our predictive models help water utilities inventory and locate their lead service lines in order to accelerate their replacement. The team began guiding Flint’s lead service line replacement program in 2016.  Since then, more than 50 cities use BlueConduit’s machine learning models to locate and inventory lead service lines. BlueConduit has inventoried more than 500,000 service lines across its projects in the United States and Canada. Those service lines provide water to more than 1,000,000 residents. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill includes $15 billion to support the removal of lead pipes. This is an opportunity to be part of a team that is helping communities get the lead out of the ground. BlueConduit is funded in part by charitable organizations including Google.org, The Rockefeller Foundation, and The Kresge Foundati
